‘A Medicine Hat favourite’: Chili Cook-Off is back

Jul 13, 2023 | 2:56 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – One of the most popular summer events in Medicine Hat is back on Saturday after a three-year absence.

Chili Cook-Off has been resurrected this year by a group of stakeholders known as Medicine Hat Downtown Collective and supported by the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce.

“The Chili Cook-Off is a Medicine Hat favourite,” says spokesperson Becky Klaiber. “There’s thousands of people that come and all kinds of businesses come to support and it’s just a really great community event.”

In years past tasters have filled downtown streets to get their fill of chili. This year there will also be a celebrity watermelon eating contest and a hot pepper eating contest for the public.

Klaiber says there are about 25 vendors signed up this year, some making chili, some making salsa and others handing out cool treats like Freezies and ice cream sandwiches.

She says the public will vote for the chili winners using a QR code and you should set an alarm for Saturday morning.

“People should come down as soon as possible because there’s thousands of people that we expect to be there and there’s only so much chili,” she says. “So it’s a good idea to come, we are going to start selling the bowls at 11 {a.m.} and then there’s going to be a siren that’s like ‘3 ,2, 1 go’ and everyone at 11:30 can go start getting their chili.”

Tasting bowls will be sold for $5 at tents on Third Street and Second Street.

For the safety of everyone, Third Street from Fourth Avenue to South Railway and Second Street from Fifth Avenue to South Railway will be closed to vehicle traffic from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
