City seeks parks and trails ambassadors

Jul 10, 2023 | 11:34 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat is looking for volunteers to help enhance the experience of all those using the parks and trails in the city.

Along with the Medicine Hat Police Service, the city is re-establishing its Parks and Trails Ambassador Program.

“This initiative is a vital part of the city’s Outdoor Enjoyment Strategy,” says Kara Brake, coordinator business and innovation, Parks and Recreation, in a news release. “The focus is on enhancing the outdoor experience for everyone who loves and uses our extensive park and trail systems.”

The Parks and Trails Ambassador Program is committed to and will promote the following values:

Safety and comfort: To ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable when enjoying the city’s parks and trails.

Protecting the natural environment: To be responsible in using our amenities to preserve our city’s beautiful, natural spaces for future generations.

Enjoyment and respect: To ensure every recreationist feels welcomed and can enjoy our parks and trails while respecting others’ experiences.

Inclusion: To make our parks and trail systems inclusive spaces for all users.

Organizers are looking for people 18 years or older to promote the safety, well-being and responsible enjoyment of the parks and trails. The city says the presence of the ambassadors will serve as a sign that the trail system remains a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

Ambassadors will register for shifts based on their availability and preferred locations. Volunteers will be identifiable in provided jackets and will carry tokens of goodwill to distribute to the public as they see fit.

Anyone interested in learning more about the program is invited to information sessions on July 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. at the Big Marble Go Centre.
