Bikes stolen from Redcliff Public Library both recovered

REDCLIFF, AB – Both bikes that were stolen from the Redcliff Public Library in June have been recovered. The Redcliff Public Library announced on Wednesday that the second bike had been found and was returned and that charges have been laid on the man who stole the bicycles.

The bikes were stolen by a man using a grinder to cut the locks during the early hours of June 10. One of the bikes was recovered a couple of weeks after the incident, the second was found by Medicine Hat Police on Friday, June 30.

The Redcliff Public Library expressed gratefulness to the Medicine Hat Police and Redcliff RCMP, as well as those who shared the story on social media to help get word out.

The bikes have been placed inside the library following the incident. Library manager Tracy Laturnus says that the library has not had as many people come to rent out a bike since the decision to keep the bikes inside was made as a result of last month’s theft. She says that the support from the surrounding communities was something that the library won’t ever forget.

“It did draw attention to the program because, with the number of likes and shares and everything that happened with our social media, when the bikes did go missing, it was nice to see people out there helping us out,” Laturnus said on Thursday.

The program will continue to run throughout the summer until the end of September when the season comes to a close. Laturnus says that despite the bikes not being out in public view, the bikes are still available to be rented.

Laturnus encourages people to come to the library to learn more.
