TNR program for feral cats returns to council

Jul 4, 2023 | 11:40 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat City Council is expected to have a full agenda this evening.

Two of the topics to be covered include a debate on giving residents a break on their utility rates and a presentation will be made on the TNR – or trap, neuter, release – program proposal for feral cats.

Officials from the SPCA are listed on the agenda to speak about the TNR program and answer questions. APARC – the city’s pound service provider – is also listed on the agenda but they tell CHAT News they will have a representative at the meeting, however will not be presenting any materials.

The issue had been defeated in June but is back in front of council after a council committee voted to bring it back under an amended Responsible Pet Ownership bylaw.

There will also be a discussion on recreation facilities planning and an update on funding that has already been approved for the Medicine Hat Curling Club.

As well, several budget amendments will be discussed, including the request for an additional $150,000 to provide additional security to allow the public washrooms at the city’s transit terminal to operate 24 hours, seven days per week, to function as the sole washroom in the downtown core.
