MEDICINE HAT, AB – The North American Indigenous Games is approaching, celebrating and reconnecting Indigenous people through sport.

Local Alex Baird had his sights set on the games, but wasn’t able to attend tryouts. Instead, he sent highlight footage to recruiters hoping he would still be selected. Due to his talent and previous accomplishments, he made the team.

Baird hasn’t met his teammates for the games yet, but already feels connected to some of them. A few players are in the same band as him, and have been messaging back and forth.

Baird’s new relationship with his teammates reiterates a value of the games, “connecting Indigenous people through sport”.

“It’s pretty exciting and it’s kind of interesting to find other guys that are part of my band, like I’ve never found anyone before, and so it’s kind of a nice little bond that I have with them already,” Baird explained.

The North American Indigenous Games start July 15th in Kjipuktuk (Halifax) on the land of Dartmouth, Millbrook First Nation and Sipekne’katik.
