MEDICINE HAT, AB – City police welcomed a new four-legged member to their ranks on Friday.

Bronx and Const. Garreth MacPherson completed their certification and is the newest K9 team at the Medicine Hat Police Service.

Bronx is a one-and-a-half-year-old German shepherd and MacPherson says he’s the youngest dog MHPS has ever had. MacPherson is a 12-year veteran of the MHPS who has had a variety of roles but has always wanted to have a K9 partner.

Bronx and MacPherson can be called out for a variety of situations.

“Tracking is one of those things. So if someone were to leave the scene of a crime can we track them?” says MacPherson. “And then also show control too. If I tell my dog to stop will he stop? There’s a control aspect to that as well. Building searches so that’s something we commonly do too on the street is building searches, compound searching. Evidence is another thing so him detecting, finding evidence and yeah kind of all those things combined in a day.”

The pair had its first call this morning, tracking someone after a vehicle involved in a collision was abandoned near the airport.

It was a success and Bronx earned his first pets as a police service dog.
