Alberta premier wants Ottawa to help end B.C. port strike
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is urging Ottawa to work with all parties to ensure a rapid resolution to a strike by thousands of B.C. port workers.
Smith said in a tweet yesterday the strike is disrupting Canadian and global supply chains, and has the potential to cause substantial economic harm on families and businesses, including ones in Alberta.
International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada president Rob Ashton is asking the federal government not to interfere in the face of calls from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and other business groups.
A spokesman for Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan says federal mediators will continue supporting both sides and adds the government believes the best deals are made at the negotiating table.
