YMCA making downtown branch more accessible

Jun 21, 2023 | 10:19 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The YMCA of Medicine Hat is improving accessibility at its downtown branch.

Two new barrier-free universal changerooms featuring fully-accessible washroom and shower facilities will soon be unveiled. Construction started in early May and is expected to wrap up this month. The project was done thanks to the support of the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat.

Next up, the YMCA will modernize the lobby area and membership desk. A new desk will have both sitting and standing heights to serve people with mobility challenges. A new child-minding location will also be established on the main floor.

Sharon Hayward, CEO of the YMCA of Medicine Hat, says in a news release the YMCA is committed to ensuring programs and facilities are as inclusive as possible.

“The introduction of universal washrooms and the renovation of our lobby exemplify our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our community,” says Hayward.

The YMCA of Medicine Hat is also launching workABILITIES, an employment program designed to help those with disabilities find and maintain meaningful work. It will also rebrand the Young Moms’ Program to Y Parent to ensure parents of all genders receive the support they need.
