National Indigenous Peoples Day festivities commence
MEDICINE HAT, AB – Proclaimed in 1996, National Indigenous Peoples Day is today, coinciding with the summer solstice.
Jace Anderson, the executive director for Tourism Medicine Hat, says that he’s excited for the events as it brings awareness and to celebrate the history and culture of the Indigenous community.
Events start at 9 a.m. at Kin Park, where a Medicine Hat Sunshine Trolley will transport participants on a guided tour to the Saamis Teepee, Saamis Archeological Site and what was the Metis Community in Saratoga Park. Tickets can be bought online at the Tourism Medicine Hat website.
Afterwards, at 11 a.m., again at Kin Park, there will be a powwow presentation, a teepee display, food trucks and face painting. You can call Saamis Employment and Training at 403-504-4056 to get more details about this event.
