YMCA enhancing accessibility

MEDICINE HAT, AB–The YMCA of Medicine Hat is taking steps to enhance accessibility.

The YMCA says thanks to the generous support of the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat, there will soon be two new barrier-free universal changerooms at the Downtown branch.

Constructed started in early May and will feature fully accessible washroom and shower facilities when completed this month.

The Y is also renovating the lobby downtown with the installation of a new desk with both sitting and standing heights to better serve individuals with mobility challenges.

A new child minding location is being established on the ground floor as the Y has seen an increase in attendance levels post pandemic.

The Y says these upgrades are part of a “commitment to create inclusive spaces for all members and staff. The YMCA is dedicated to ensuring our programs and facilities are as inclusive as possible,” says Sharon Hayward, CEO of YMCA of Medicine Hat. Hayward added, “the introduction of universal washrooms and the renovation of our lobby exemplify our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our community.

The Y is extremely grateful to the Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat for their support.
