MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s been unusually hot in Medicine Hat this year with temperatures above 30 C common so far this spring. And you probably shouldn’t expect much relief as June becomes July.

Two Hatters are providing some relief for residents in a throwback to days gone by.

Marney Chalifoux and Darla Christianson are co-owners of a small ice cream truck that Charlifoux has driven through the Flats, Crescent Heights, the Southeast Hill and Crestwood since last week. The truck sells treats like Drumsticks, Firecrackers, Freezies and more, delighting and cooling down people of all ages.

It’s brought memories back for some of her customers and provided her with new memories about the kindness and generosity of strangers.

“A lot of them say its just an old school tradition coming back and it’s very healthy for the community,” says Charlifoux. “And I’ve got a lot of guys down here in the Flats, police officers included where they’ll flag me down and give me a few bucks and say ‘look if somebody doesn’t have money down here today make sure everybody gets ice cream. And it’s a beautiful thing, paying it forward like that.”

Chalifoux goes out weekdays after school is out and on the weekend, and has been out for eight or nine hours on some days. She says when the school year ends she’ll be extending the hours she’s out on the truck and wants to get to even more parts of the city.
