MEDICINE HAT, AB – The hot weather in southeastern Alberta may be broken up by a thunderstorm on Monday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued thunderstorm watches for its Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield and Cypress Hills Provincial Park-Foremost areas.
The weather service says strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain are expected to develop this afternoon and into the evening hours. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, the watch warns, and heavy downpours are likely to cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
Thunderstorm watches have been issued for areas along the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary as far north as Fort McMurray. Further east heat warnings are in effect across Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
