Man charged following serious incident in Strathcona Island Park
MEDICINE HAT, AB – Police say a man is facing more than a dozen charges related to a serious incident last week that closed Strathcona Island Park.
At about 9 a.m. on May 26, Medicine Hat Police Service were notified of a male believed to be in possession of a firearm and experiencing mental health problems in the park. Police confirmed the male had a loaded pump action shotgun and while interacting with police pointed this shotgun at officers.
Police say they used a robot to deliver a communication device to the male and following negotiations, the male surrendered peacefully. The park was closed to the public for just over five hours.
A 53-year-old Medicine Hat male was being held awaiting a bail hearing, say police and faces four counts of pointing a firearm, four counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of possessing a weapon dangerous to the public. The male also faces one count each of carrying a concealed firearm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a prohibited device, mischief and resisting arrest
