MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Astronomy Club invites you to join them and look toward the heavens this weekend.

The club is hosting its annual public star party and open house on Saturday at 7 p.m. at its Sunridge Observatory, located just off of Highway 3 about 17 kilometres west of the city.

The event will have some hands-on opportunities for attendees.

“You get the opportunity to look through a telescope which is not something you get every day and a large telescope at that,” says club secretary-treasurer James Pauslon. “So you’ll get a closeup view for example of the moon something that you’ll never you know on an average day you won’t get that opportunity to look through a large telescope and see that that’s kind of fun.”

“We’re also going to have a telescope set up where you can bring your smartphone up to the lens and shoot a picture of the moon hopefully you can get something that you can call your own out of that.”

Paulson adds club members will be on hand to teach everyone the basics and the finer points of astronomy and stargazing. As well, one member will tell people about the spectacular things they’ve been up to in the past couple of years.

Overall, Paulson says, it will be a chance to interact with club members and find out more about what the astronomy club does.

This is the first of three major events the club holds during the year. There is also a five-day Southern Alberta Star Party in Elkwater in September and a membership drive in October.

Paulson says if you can’t make it on Saturday you can contact the club through its Facebook page for more information.
