MEDICINE HAT, AB – You may have found an empty bag on your doorstep this weekend. The Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub hopes you will fill it up and put it back where you found it.

In partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Root Cellar is doing its first Food Round Up.

Executive director Melissa Mullis says from May 20-24, bags and a piece of paper with the basic needs list are being dropped off at every home in the city.

On May 27 people will fan out across the city to pickup the filled bags from doorsteps.

Mullis says they wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to donate and this has been a successful endeavour in places like Calgary and Red Deer.

“We were just kind of trying to think of innovative ways to collect food. So we are seeing a lot more families than we’ve ever seen before and so the need is up and so we, you know as a group, decided hey you know, how do we get more food through the door,” she says. “And I think that this is a really cool idea. like it said it’s been very successful in a lot of other communities and we thought hey let’s give it a try.”

If you didn’t get a bag delivered, Mullis says you can pick one up at the Root Cellar on Maple Avenue.
