MEDICINE HAT, AB – Three locals are in Montreal for the 2023 Judo Open Nationals in Montreal this weekend.

Malakai Kurpjuweit and Robin Kurpjuweit are based out of the Medicine Hat Judo Club.

Robin is hoping to improve his podium finish to gold medal, after his bronze medal in last years event.

On the other hand, 16 year old Malakai is hoping for a top ten finish. Malakai is competing against against athletes in the U18 category.

Redcliff is represented by their very own Jack McAlpine. At 15 years old, he will be entering his second nationals. He is hoping to bring home a medal, representing the Judo Canada Regional Training Center in Lethbridge.

Medicine Hat Judo Club President and coach Scot McAlpine explains his thoughts about the three athletes in a press release.

“All three athletes have worked incredibly hard this year, preparing for this,” McAlpine states.

He adds, “I think we’ll see that preparedness show up on the mats this weekend. Three people from a club the size of ours is quite a few. It’s an exciting time for both the athletes and the Club.”
