Redcliff library summer reading program expected to fill quickly

REDCLIFF, AB – Reading is something kids usually reserve for the school year, but the Redcliff Library wants to ensure kids are reading all year long.

Today the library announced their annual Summer Reading Program. Registration opens June 1st, and hosts kids from ages five to 12.

Library director Tracy Laturnus says the program fills up quickly, and there are only 40 spots available.

Additionally, she says the program has a new twist every year. Kids can still expect to be reading, making crafts, and having trips to the splash park.

This year they’ve had to increase the price of the program from $50 to $75. This is because of a reduction in funding from the federal government. Still, the price works out to about $1.50 an hour.

Overall, says the program is helpful for Redcliff parents who can’t drive their kids to summer programs, because of it’s close proximity.

“It’s really good to have this in the community because it allows the kids to get on their bikes and come to the library. Sometimes mom and dad are working full days and they can’t get home to drive the kids back and forth to these programs, so this does give them some freedom,” Laturnus explains.

She adds, “yeah, I think the kids really enjoy it, they make some new friends and all that fun stuff.”

The program will begin July 3rd, and runs for six weeks.
