Young lacrosse team celebrates their first win while developing a love for the sport

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A young lacrosse team stole the hearts of viewers while celebrating their first victory in a game at Kinplex this weekend.

Medicine Hat families cherished the occasion to watch their kids play at home, because the Sun Devils typically travel to Taber or Brooks for games.

This weekend teams were welcomed from Swift Current, Moosejaw and Crowsnest Pass.

Travis Nemeth was able to watch his son play while also coaching.

He began coaching because the Medicine Hat Lacrosse Club was lacking volunteers.

“It’s a lot of fun. Sometimes it can be trying because he doesn’t want to listen to dad all of the time, but usually it’s a lot of fun and you go home and everybody has a good time,” explains coach Nemeth.

While Nemeth never played lacrosse himself, he made an effort to learn in recent years so his son could join. He says he has enjoyed the experience so far.

“At the start it was tough but the more you get used to it and the more time you do it the kids actually start to respect you more and more, and they fall into line pretty good and take direction when they need to,” he says.

Archer Nemeth was inspired to join this team because of a family member who played for the Junior B Sun Devils.

With help from Archer, the team conquered the Swift Current Rampage on Saturday.

“My first goal was today,” he says.

Some of Archer’s teammates explained their favorite parts of the game.

Kipton Bohrn says, “it’s really fun cause then they can pass it and all of us can score goals.”

Kashton O’Brien explains, “we scored 17 goals and we did a lot of work.”

Travis Nemeth says the league has seen more kids join this year.

Athletes from other sports have joined after trying lacrosse at winter intervals.

“We’ve had a lot of hockey kids come out cause we’re in the spring so it’s either spring hockey or us. We had a lot of baseball kids switch over this year which was actually pretty nice, it really upped our numbers,” coach Nemeth explains.

The U9 Sun Devils will continue to travel and compete until the end of June when playoffs start.
