May 11, 2023 | 11:52 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The city has found its new fire chief.

The City of Medicine Hat announced Chad Eakins as the new fire chief and director of emergency services. He has served as acting fire chief since Brian Stauth moved out of the role and became managing director of public services earlier this year.

Eakins has served with the fire services team since 2007 and has more than 20 years of emergency service experience. He previously served as deputy chief in 2021.

“Succession planning is an important aspect of organizational success, and I am pleased to note that the organizational structure in fire and emergency services is an example of how a succession plan with structured opportunities for mentorship, coaching, and opportunities to lead can be very successful,” city manager Ann Mitchell said in a statement. “I am confident in our choice to offer Chad the role.”

Eakins’ appointment was also assessed based on his leadership capability, skillset, and his alignment to the role.

Stauth supports Eakins’ appointment.

“Chad has great experience and is a trusted leader,” Stauth said, “I know he will do a great job in leading the fire and emergency services team and overseeing this critical service to our community. Medicine Hat is in good hands.”

Eakins’ appointment is effective immediately.
