Alberta election campaign continues with Smith facing heat for COVID-Nazi comments

May 10, 2023 | 8:58 AM

The second week of Alberta’s election campaign has been dominated by discussion of United Conservative Leader Danielle Smith’s past comments equating the COVID-19 vaccinated to Nazi supporters.

Albertans go to the polls on May 29.

On Tuesday, Smith declined to discuss comments she made in 2021, saying it was time to move on from the “dark days” of the pandemic.

She also declined to answer why she was allowed to stay on as a UCP candidate while the party last year barred a candidate from running in part for making similar comments.

Meanwhile, UCP candidates Jeremy Nixon, Tanya Fir and Pamela Rath are set to make an announcement today about supports for women’s shelters and sexual assault survivors.

NDP Leader Rachel Notley has no public events scheduled for today.
