MEDICINE HAT, AB – A walk is being held at Medicine Hat College on Friday to mark Red Dress Day.

May 5 is a national day of awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people (MMIWG2S+).

Participants in the walk are asked to wear red and are welcome to bring a drum if they have one.

The walk advocates ending violence against women and draws attention to the high number of violence that occurs against first nations women.

A welcome and prayer will be held by Elder Charlie Fox and the Wild Tongue Drum Group will be performing.

Medicine Hat Police Chief Alan Murphy says the walk is a small step toward reconciliation.

Murphy says he identifies with a term used by Chastity Karen, the founder of the FireKeepers Women’s Society.

“Instead of reconciliation, she calls it reconcile-action. So reconciliation if there’s actually not (anyone) doing anything with it, it’s kind of not as meaningful,” says Murphy.

“Some people think it all ends with an apology. For me, the apology is the start of everything and then you have to start the road and the road likely doesn’t end. There’s a lot of work that needs to get done,” he adds.

The Medicine Hat Police Service reviewed all files on missing persons in the city as far back as their record date and found there are no unsolved cases that require further investigation.

The walk starts at 5:30 p.m. in front of the college.
