Medicine Hat, AB–The City of Medicine Hat is encouraging residents to get out and help beautify the community for Earth Day.

“Earth Day is an important reminder that we all have a responsibility to protect and preserve our environment,” says Jeff Quinlan, Parks and Recreation technician, City of Medicine Hat. “We hope that our “Litter Blitz” initiative will inspire our residents to take positive action towards a more sustainable future.”

To participate, residents, families and friends can use a garbage bag from home, or pick up supplies, including plastic gloves, to pick up litter and other garbage in Medicine Hat’s parks, natural areas and coulees. Parks staff will remove any large items that are reported.

Supplies will be made available at the front main entrance of the Parks Office at 88 Kipling Street SE on April 22 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Coffee and donuts will be available.

“Earth Day is about promoting positive stewardship of the environment and encouraging actions that are beneficial to our community, for people and the wildlife,” Quinlan said. “If you are able to participate, please consider disposing of any garbage you collect in your garbage collection bins.”

To encourage community spirit, staff will be running several contests throughout the summer where residents will be entered to win recreation passes at Big Marble Go Centre, a camping night, and comfort cabin at Gas City Campground.

To enter, participantsare encouraged to take selfies with their Earth Day finds and share and tag the City of Medicine Hat’s Facebook page.

“We thought this would be a fun way to get people of all ages involved in the event,” Quinlan added. “We want to see how many bags you picked up, or maybe it’s the weirdest piece of trash you pick up. Anyone who share their photo on social media and tags the City of Medicine Hat during the summer months will be entered to win.”

To wrap up the summer long clean-up, a community BBQ will be held by City staff on Tuesday, August 22 at the front area of the Parks and Recreation building located at 88 Kipling Street SE.

“We want to celebrate the hard work of our community and couldn’t think of a better way than to have everyone join us in Kin Coulee after the clean-up is complete,” Quinlan added.
