Medicine Hat Minor Softball needs more coaches due to demand

Apr 17, 2023 | 5:33 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Minor Softball is seeing an increase in demand for minor softball – only this means they now need more coaches and umpires.

Michelle Campbell, the president of Medicine Hat Minor Softball, says that demand for minor softball has increased by 36 per cent since the pandemic.

However, a number of roles need to be filled in order to expand, including: one blast four coach for the youth team that plays once a week; assistant coaches for the U5 and U7 tee-ball; a coaching pair for the high school McCoy fastball team; and eight umpires.

Campbell says tons of coaching resources, like practice plans, drill templates and manuals, are available online to help get started.

The president also says coaching is a great way for people to build relationships with kids and get that initial coaching experience.

“Primarily, the need we have is for our youngest divisions, our play divisions, so it’s usually the best time to start coaching. There’s not a ton of expectations and a ton of technical work that has to happen, and it’s really about fostering a love for the game,” said Campbell.

Campbell says the increase in demand is because some associations dipped during the pandemic and little equipment is needed for the sport, making it affordable to play.

Medicine Hat Minor Softball says they will cover the cost of a criminal record check.
