Whooping cough outbreak spreading in Alberta
The whooping cough outbreak declared in January by Alberta Health Services in the South Zone has continued to grow.
AHS says there are now 114 identified cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, including a small number in the Central Zone.
The majority of cases have been children under age 18 years, with 72 per cent being between one and nine years old. During the course of this outbreak five children have required hospitalization, says AHS.
Cases in South Zone were previously identified in communities of the County of Lethbridge, Coaldale, Taber, Vauxhall, Grassy Lake and Bow Island. There are now cases in the County of Forty Mile, Seven Persons, and Fort Macleod.
