Provincial funds helps keep local bank shelves stocked up

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub has received $65,000 in a food security grant to help keep its shelves full.

The province announced a funding increase of $20 million over two years to help food banks deal with rising food costs last November.

So far the province has provided $10 million to food banks province-wide to purchase emergency food, including here in Medicine Hat.

In addition to the $65,000 food grant the Root Cellar also received a donation matching grant of $55,000.

In total, the Root Cellar will receive $110,000 from the province. Executive director Melissa Mullis says the funding is vital to keeping food on their shelves as the rising cost of living continues to impact residents in the community.

“This funding is really important to us because we are seeing so many more families coming to access our emergency food pantry so it gives us the opportunity to purchase emergency food. The impact of this donation is huge and it’s really been a great help to us,” says Mullis.

All the funding will go directly to replenishing the food bank’s emergency food supply.
