MHPS want special shoulder patch flash to mark 125 years

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service will celebrate its 125th anniversary next year and plans are already being made to mark the milestone.

One of those is to have a commemorative, limited edition shoulder flash patch designed.

Insp. Brent Secondiak says police are tapping into the creative talents of the community for the design and there are virtually no limits on what could be done.

“Completely open,” he says. “We’ll, of course, have to decide what it’s going to look like at the end of the day but we really wanted to capture you know the history, rich history of Medicine Hat. Some of our Indigenous relations that we’ve had over the years, perhaps some of the big tourist attractions that we have here like the teepee of the river things of that nature. So we’re really excited to see what the community might come up with.”

Some of the previous shoulder flash patches are on display in the lobby of the police station.

While the one designed for the 125th anniversary won’t be part of officers’ regular uniforms it could be worn for special occasions, given to special visitors and dignitaries and shared as a collector’s item.

Secondiak says they get dozens of requests every month from police officers or just collectors around the world for their shoulder flash patches and this will be another they can send out.

The deadline to email your design to mhps@mhps.ca is May 28 at 4 p.m.

Among the other celebratory events planned will be a more elaborate and larger-than-usual open house, Secondiak says.
