Local Girl Guides return to door-to-door sales

MEDICINE HAT, AB – They used to show up at your door around this time. Now they’re back.

Girl Guides of Cypress-Hills and Medicine Hat have returned to selling their vanilla and chocolate cookies door-to-door, while also embracing new changes to the program.

Linda Gove, who’s been guiding in Medicine Hat for 42 years, says the return to door-to-door cookie sales allows the girls to once again socialize and learn how to make change.

However, the guides say the girls were forced to increase cookie sales from $1 to $6 due to inflation. The increase in cost ensures youth benefit from girl empowerment, leadership development and fun activities.

In addition, Gove says many other new changes are coming to the program as well.

“A lot of the program is changing – we want to be more inclusive, we want to get the word out that we are accepting all types – everybody is welcome to guide, and that’s really something that we’re working towards changing,” said Gove.

Presently, the guides are planning for a Provincial Rally Day that extends to all units in Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Yukon.
