Move with the Seed supporting Mustard Seed programs

MEDICINE HAT, AB – People are on the move in Medicine Hat this spring as part of the Mustard Seed’s Move with the Seed fundraiser.

Morgan Widmer, events and volunteer coordinator for the Medicine Hat Mustard Seed, says about a dozen people have signed up since the March 1 launch of the program.

Move with the Seed challenges people to be active and moving between now and May 31 for whatever number of kilometres they’re comfortable with and get family and friends to sponsor them and donate.

“It just lets the community know kind of the services we offer in our wellness centre,” she says. “So some of the ones is we have mental health counselling, we run an ID program, we have a health advocate on staff, we have a social worker on staff. So we try to connect with services that they need. if there’s anything that we can”t help them with then we’ll connect them to other organizations or service that they are looking for.”

Move with the Seed is taking the place of the traditional Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser.

Widmer says people experiencing homelessness average walking 20 kilometres each day and the idea of the new program is to raise awareness of that harsh reality.

“It’s a great way to get out, enjoy the amazing trails that we have in Medicine Hat and to raise funds for a good cause,” she says. “We encourage people to participate through any movement or activity that they love. So whether it’s swimming, biking, walking, cycling, yoga. Whatever speaks to them the have the option to complete their kilometres with their choice of activity.”

Widmer says all of the funds raised locally will support the health and wellness program at the Medicine Hat Mustard Seed.

At the same time as Move with the Seed the Mustard Seed is also running an online silent auction for Traeger smoker and Yeti cooler, and 50-50 raffle.
