Loose, casual, fun: a kitchen party at the Esplanade

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Two Canadians and one Australian are going to be singing the blues at the Esplanade on Thursday night.

Suzie Vinnick, Charlie A’Court, and Lloyd Spiegel have combined their talents for a new album and before its release next month are on the road. They’re bringing the lively and joyful spirit of an East Coast Kitchen Party out in their “International Roots ‘n’ Blues Kitchen Party” tour.

If you’ve never been to an East Coast kitchen party, Vinnick says they try to recreate the spontaneity and togetherness the gatherings are known for.

“It’s not that it’s a loose show but it’s just kind of, just kind of fun and we’ll tease each other, we’ll have some laughs on stage, we’ll get to be a little goofy,” she explains. “It’s a show but there’s kind of a looseness like a kitchen party and casual and where everyone, we’re hoping to bring the audience in with us almost. Like we don’t have them literally on stage but sort of figurative in that we’re all one unit sitting in one giant pretend kitchen.”

Vinnick says the three came to play together recently as bookers were leery to hire solo acts coming out of the pandemic. The idea to book shows together was appealing to combine fanbases and increase drawing power.

So far it’s working and weaving together nicely, says Vinnick.

She says the three each play music that’s under the blues umbrella but approach it in different ways to create a unique sound and show.

“I think Charlie’s pretty heavy soul-influenced, I think Lloyd is pretty heavily like early blues influenced and me I’m all over the map. It goes anywhere from Stevie Ray Vaughan to Ozzy Osboure to Heart to Supertramp,” she says.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are still available. See tixx.ca for more.
