Doggie Olympics to have fun and strengthen bonds

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Every dog owner probably thinks their dog is a gold medallist. Now you have a chance to prove it.

True North K9 Compound is hosting its inaugural Doggie Olympics this season.

Angel Dumoulin, a volunteer at True North K9, says the Doggie Olympics are 12 fun events for you and your dog.

“We have some ball events and frisbee events, some obedience so you have to heel your dog or get them to dance for you. You know there’s all kinds of neat things for every level, every experience level it’s just for fun,” she explains. “So we have some judges that are going to see your video and collect your times and your points and figure out who the winner is at the end of September.”

Dumoulin says there’s no fee to enter you just need to submit a photo of your dog on the pose spools at the facility and then start competing. You need to film your dogs completing each event and email them to True North K9 for verification and in some cases judging.

People can go out on their own time to do the events. Dumoulin says there are signs at each station that describe what to do and for a donation of dog or cat food for Furry Friends Food Foundation she will meet with you and help you if your dog is struggling.

Dumoulin says there will be obedience benefits to teaching your dog these new skills and also it’ll be just plain fun.

“Fun with their dog outside in the fresh air. You know we’re away from our screens we’re focusing on our dogs. We didn’t get dogs to just sit on the couch we actually got dogs to go out and have fun with so let’s do that”

You can find more information about the Doggie Olympics at truenorthk9compund.dog or on the True North K9 Compound Facebook page.

Dumoulin says gold sponsors for the Doggie Olympics are Southern Alberta K9 First Aid and Pet Park Boarding Kennel, and more sponsorship spots are available.
