MEDICINE HAT, AB – Three people, including one youth, have been charged in an overnight break and enter at a residential garage last month.

Medicine Hat Police Service says at about 1:20 a.m. on March 23, a homeowner on the Southwest Hill spotted three people on their property and called police. Officers responded and used a drone to quickly locate the suspects. Property from the garage was recovered.

The MHPS has been utilizing drones or unmanned aerial vehicles since 2020.

“The drone proved to be an effective tool during this investigation. It allowed officers to quickly locate the individuals and officers on scene were then able to respond with precision” says Insp. Joe West. “We also want to commend the homeowner for immediately reporting this matter by calling 911. Doing so, allowed officers to be rapidly deployed to the area and ultimately led to identifying those responsible.”

Transport Canada regulations and MHPS policy limit their use to crime scene/ traffic scene photography, searches for missing or wanted persons and tactical operations during high-risk incidents or crimes in progress.

One 18-year-old from Medicine Hat is charged with break and enter and failing to comply with probation. Another 18-year-old from Medicine Hat is charged with break and enter.

A youth who cannot be named is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, break and enter and failing to comply with probation.
