MEDICINE HAT, AB – Birdies will be flying indoors at two city gymnasiums this weekend. But it’s not feathered friends trapped inside.

The annual St. Mary’s School/Notre Dame Academy Mega Badminton Tournament takes place at the Notre Dame and South Ridge YMCA gyms Friday night and all day Saturday.

“It’s just really cool. They love being in a huge tournament we make a big deal out of it,” said St. Mary’s athletic director and badminton coach Curt Moll. “For some kids it’s the only tournament they get to play this year. Many of the schools have no-cut policies for their badminton programs so this is a chance for them to play.”

Moll says just about every local junior high school will be represented as well as schools from Brooks, Lethbridge, Taber and Bow Island. For the first time, it is also an interprovincial tournament with players coming from Fox Valley, Sask.

Moll says there are 775 players coming from 36 schools.

He adds everyone is welcome to what they think it the biggest badminton tournament in southern Alberta.

After the Easter break badminton players have the city championships coming up followed by zones.
