Milk River emergency department closed until April 3

MILK RIVER, AB – The emergency department at the Milk River Health Centre will be closed for more than four days this week due to a lack of physician coverage, says Alberta Health Services.

AHS says the department will be closed from noon on March 29 until 8 a.m. on April 3, when the department will return to 24-hour service.

Nursing staff will remain on-site during the closure to provide care for long-term care residents.

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency. EMS calls will be re-routed to Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge (87 km away) or Raymond Health Centre (60 km away). Patients seeking care can access emergency services at either of those facilities.

Residents are reminded to call Health Link at 811, which is available 24/7 for non-emergency health-related questions. Individuals requiring non-emergency medical care are also encouraged to call their family physician.

The town’s emergency department has been closed several times since late last year. In February, AHS held a community engagement session to address the physician shortage and emergency department closures.
