MEDICINE HAT, AB – A report tabled at Medicine Hat’s public service committee meeting detailed the annual state of parks and recreation in the community.

The report highlighted the current needs of city parks and recreation spaces and showed the metrics around how many residents are using these spaces.

It also showcased 23 future projects the city is working on and the city says this year they are focused on improving the safety, quality and experience of the trail network system.

City staff say they plan to increase signage and add more yellow lines along the 155 kilometres of trail within the city to improve trail etiquette.

Scott Richter, business and innovation manager with parks and recreation says want to see more good citizenship along the trails, like using a bicycle bell when passing others.

“We’ve seen a lot more people in a whole bunch of different areas that we didn’t typically have before. The introduction of e-scooters; e-bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, people with dogs,” says Richter.

“That’s all increased and that’s a really positive thing so with that increase we have to try and make sure everybody has the tools they need to be safe on the trails,” adds Richter.

Richter says the city’s trail system has seen increased use since the pandemic.
