Alberta environment minister won’t seek re-election

CALGARY – Another Alberta cabinet minister has announced she will not run in the upcoming provincial election.

Environment Minister Sonya Savage says on Twitter that she has decided not to run for re-election in the expected May 29 vote.

Savage, the member for Calgary North-West, says she has decided to spend more time with her family.

She is the second cabinet minister today to announce their intentions not to run again.

Finance Minister Travis Toews ended months of speculation this morning with his announcement.

He says there were personal considerations, family considerations and some business considerations.

Toews, the member for Grande Prairie-Wapiti, dismissed suggestions the decision was tied to his loss to Premier Danielle Smith in the leadership race last October or to the party’s further shift to the right under her leadership.
