New look for police photo radar vehicles and remote boxes

Mar 23, 2023 | 9:28 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Last night, the Medicine Hat Police Commission heard from officers who say they’ve gone above and beyond the new automated Traffic Enforcement Guidelines.

Recent changes to the signage on traffic patrol vehicles and remote boxes conducting photo radar have been adopted in the city.

Bright colours and clear identifiable marking can now be seen on all radar vehicles and remote boxes.

Insp. Joe West says before the recent changes the Medicine Hat Police Services met the minimum standards of the traffic enforcement guidelines.

“You’ll notice a whole new look to our vehicles now. They are very brightly coloured and blaze green. Really the point of our automated traffic enforcement is to get people to slow down. It’s traffic safety and hopefully the new look of the vehicles and the remote box help with that,” says West

12 per cent of existing photo radar locations with low vehicle traffic will be removed following an audit conducted by the police service last year.

Currently Medicine Hat Police Services use two photo radar vehicles and one mobile photo radar box.

“We know that speed contributes to a lot of vehicle crashes and certainly our sites are based on collision data and so fourth. And really it is about traffic safety and just want folks to slow down and be cognisant of pedestrians in the area or any other hazards while driving,” said West.

The next Police Commission open meeting is April 19 at 6:00 PM in City Council Chambers.
