Affordable vacation spots for this spring

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Every spring, Canadians race to the airport in hopes of escaping the cold for a week or two.

A local travel agent shared some tropical yet affordable places to visit in the coming months.

Loreen Piehl-Wiedemann, a travel agent with Appealing Travel, says it depends on the quality you’re after.

But, 3 to 5 star flights to Mexico and Cuba or even cruises to Europe are fairly cheap this spring.

She says places like Australia and Hawaii are ridiculously expensive, and the costs of hotels, flights and food have significantly increased.

Booking during the week is cheaper than the weekends, but not by much.

She says the biggest discounts will come from sales, not from scheduling on certain days.

“It’s more the luck of the draw of when the sales are. And they really don’t come out on a certain day or time, even for traveling. Like it is cheaper to go during the week than leave on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, but it’s not that much of a difference,” said Piehl-Wiedemann.

The agent says booking in advance also helps, especially for cruises which can be booked a year in advance.

She says a travel agent can also help reduce the headache of cancelled flights.
