Community Foundation grows to serve ‘unique’ needs in rural southeastern Alberta

Medicine Hat, AB – The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA) says rural communities are their top priority in the next fiscal year.

The CFSEA made a public presentation to the city council March 20.

When a donation is made to the CFSEA it’s invested and the revenue that investment makes is given back to credible charities across the region.

In Medicine Hat, endowment funds have been created for non-profit organizations including the Ronald McDonald House and the Women’s Shelter.

In Brooks an endowment fund was created to support the public library in 2018.

Now the CFSEA is starting to look at the unique needs of rural communities surrounding Medicine Hat and Redcliff.

Niki Grey, Executive Director of Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta says they established a cypress county community fund to ensure rural communities are not being under served.

“It’s been astronomical the impact that we’ve had already in those communities. You know we set them up thinking that okay we’ll grow the endowment, we’ll be able to give out more. But we have given out more,” says Grey.

“It’s been great getting to spread the word about the grants that are available in those areas and the connections we’ve made,” adds Grey.

The CFSEA is able to give tax receipts for any donations over $25.

The current CFSEA endowment fund has grown to around $25 million since it was established 30 years ago.
