COVID hospitalizations down, new cases up in province’s update

Mar 15, 2023 | 4:23 PM

There are fewer COVID inpatients in Alberta hospitals but more new cases in the latest weekly update released on Wednesday.

As of March 13, there are 486 Albertans currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 11 of those people are in ICU. Last week there were 518 in hospital and 12 in ICU.

There were 388 new cases over the most recent seven-day period, up from last week’s 347.

There have been 5,619 COVID deaths recorded in Alberta over the course of the pandemic. That’s three fewer than reported last week, which sometimes happens as cases are further investigated and reclassified from COVID counts

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 19 new cases in the South Zone in the update, the same as last week.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone of 6.1 new cases per 100,000 people is well below the provincial average of 8.8.

There have been 41,080 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 522 deaths, none new in this update.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.5 per cent of all people have received one dose, 76 per cent have received two doses and 38.8 per cent have received three doses.
