Maple Creek, Historic Reesor Ranch chosen for Christmas movie setting

MAPLE CREEK, SK – Hollywood had its biggest night of the year on Sunday. This coming Sunday residents in Maple Creek will get a small taste of the movie industry and Christmas in March.

Canadian company Trilight Entertainment has chosen Maple Creek for the filming of the movie A Cowboy Christmas. Decorations are going up in the community this week.

“I’ve borrowed many decorations from our local Salvation Army it’s wonderful and individual people as well bringing me lights, etc.,” says Carmen Drapeau, who has been facilitating between the company and the community. “People are, I think people are really, everybody I’ve talked to is amazed by it. So I think it’s a great opportunity for the community for Maple Creek and area and of course the historic Reesor Ranch.

She says Saturday filming will take place downtown with the principal actors and on Sunday they’ll film a large Christmas festival scene where many townspeople will be needed as extras in the crowd.

After that production and filming will move out to the ranch, which will be the primary setting of the film.

Drapeau says the combination of Historic Reesor Ranch and the town of Maple Creek drew the production to southwest Saskatchewan.

She says producers plan to use the real name of the town, the businesses and the ranch in the film. That’s not usually the case in production, with communities typically standing in for “Anytown, U.S.A.”

“They make up names for them,” says Drapeau. “This is actually the community. I think it’s amazing and I think it’s going to be great for tourism.”
