MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Cubs have advanced to the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s South Division finals for the second straight year.

After eliminating the Cochrane Generals in six games, the Cubs will take on the Okotoks Bisons in the division finals for the second consecutive season.

Last year, Okotoks defeated Medicine Hat in six games, going on to win the league championship.

During the 2022-23 regular season, the Bisons won three of four meetings against the Cubs, outscoring them 18-10. Okotoks finished the campaign first in the division, boasting a record of 35-3-0, Medicine Hat came in second with a 27-8-3 record.

“I think last year we were maybe in awe of them, we weren’t sure how to take it,” said Cubs head coach and GM, Randy Wong on Sunday.

“This year we were able to beat them, we’ve had some really good games against them, we know they’re a beatable team.”

The Cubs most recently defeated the Bisons on Dec. 3, when they earned a 5-4 win in a back-and-forth battle at Murray & Piper Arena in Okotoks.

Game one of the South Division Finals takes place on Wednesday in Okotoks with puck drop at 8 p.m. The Cubs’ first home game is a Sunday matinee at Kinplex with opening face off at 2:45 p.m.
