Broncos stomp Tigers

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Owen Pickering led the Swift Current Broncos as they galloped through Medicine Hat, earning a 5-2 victory over the Tigers at Co-op Place on Tuesday.

Pickering scored a goal with 1:19 remaining in the first period when he fired a wrist shot past Medicine Hat goaltender Beckett Langkow. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect added three assist, including one on the game-winning power play goal.

The game-winner was scored by Josh Filmon in the middle of the second frame. The goal was his team-leading 38th of the season, he’s up to 63 points through 53 games played.

With the victory, Swift Current improves to 27-27-1-2, Medicine Hat drops to 24-24-8-1. The Broncos leap ahead of the Tigers to seventh in the Western Conference, the Tigers remain inside the playoffs, in eighth.

Tyler Mackenzie scored a power play goal in the final minute of the second period to get the Tigers on the board with his 16th of the year. Oasiz Weisblatt made the score a more respectable 5-2, scoring his 22nd goal of the year with 5:23 remaining in the third.

Pickering is up to 38 points this year and scored his 20th career WHL goal.

“It means a ton, this was a huge win for us,” said Pickering, post-game.

“We’ve been preparing for a while to play tonight against the Tigers, we have a couple more important games against them, but focusing on the weekend for our group.”

With the win, Swift Current has defeated Medicine Hat in four of five meetings this season. The team will meet again on Friday, March 24 in Swift Current. Up next for the Broncos, they’ll head to Edmonton to take on the Oil Kings on Saturday, the Tigers are back in action Wednesday night when they host the Winnipeg Ice.
