Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub celebrating Family Day with chili

MEDICINE HAT, AB – This Saturday, it’s a Family Day celebration at the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub.

There will be activities for the kids and a free chili meal, that imparts a message.

Melissa Mullis, the Executive Director of Root Cellar Food, says she looks forward to having the kids in their new space and seeing the community.

“We just hope that lots of families come out and enjoy a nice lunch and, you know, be able to learn new things and spend time together,” said Mullis.

The event, called Together at the Table, is in partnership with Food Banks Alberta. It’s in response to a growing number of Albertans – as many as one in five – needing support from Food Banks.

Kids will be able to participate in cooking demos and cupcake decorating. There will also be activities like rock painting, seed planting and building bird feeders.

Jason Lyver, the Development Manager at Alberta Food Banks, says it will also be a chance to strengthen the community and share a common meal.

“The concept behind it is that chili is such a versatile food, and a lot of times it’s a type of food that are in food banks – that are, you know, given out. So it is an opportunity for a simple meal, but that meal is bringing together to share a common meal,” said Lyver.

Those who attend are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation. Individuals are asked to register for the free event here.
