Fewer than 500 new weekly COVID-19 cases in province

New weekly cases of COVID-19 have fallen under 500 in Alberta for the first time in recent memory. The province released the updated numbers on Wednesday.

As of Feb. 13, there are 622 Albertans currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 19 of those people are in ICU. Last week there were 683 in hospital and 22 in ICU.

There were 435 new cases over the most recent seven-day period, compared to 558 last week.

There have been 5,536 COVID deaths recorded in Alberta over the course of the pandemic, 26 new this week.

The province’s COVID-19 dashboard is now showing only zone statistics instead of by municipality. There were 29 new cases in the South Zone in the update, the same as last week.

The seven-day new case rate in the zone of 9.3 new cases per 100,000 people is lower than the provincial average of 9.8.

There have been 41,009 total COVID-19 cases in the zone since the start of the pandemic, and 517 deaths, two new in this update.

Vaccination statistics for Medicine Hat show 79.4 per cent of all people have received one dose, 76 per cent have received two doses and 38.8 per cent have received three doses.
