Veiner Centre Bistro offers free coffee for Kindness Week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Many members of the community have been participating in National Kindness Week.

Medicine Hat’s Veiner Centre Bistro is taking part by offering free coffee to the public, from Feb. 13 to 17.

Generally, the centre focuses on promoting the well-being of those ages 50 and up, but Cori Fischer, Director of the Veiner Centre, says this event has no bounds.

“We’ve had a lot of our members coming down and enjoying it, but the wonderful thing is to join us at the Bistro, you don’t have to be a member – anybody from the community can come down and join us for a coffee and have a conversation with someone,” said Fischer.

Ultimately, the goal is to encourage friendships and reduce isolation in the community. Fischer says it’s about getting in touch again, especially after a couple years of isolation.

To help make it happen, the Veiner Centre partnered with the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, who gave a 200-hundred dollar donation.

So far, Fischer says the event is having quite the turn out, and there’s an activity to help get the conversation and the coffees flowing.

“We have put some table talks on all of the tables at the Bistro, and we are encouraging our members to join people they don’t know and have conversations, and to use those table talkers as a way to start a new conversation and make a new friend,” said Fischer.

“Our goal is to have people come down and join us at the Veiner Centre for a cup of coffee and a nice conversation. And that’s really what this whole week at the Veiner Centre is all about,” said Fischer.

The last day to grab a free coffee and maybe make a new friend is Friday, Feb. 17.

Fischer says they plan to continue with Spread Kindness YHX, but it would be great if these events happened on a regular basis.
