New APARC facility planning summer opening, months ahead schedule

MEDICINE HAT, AB – City staff announced a new facility for Alberta Pound and Rescue Centres (APARC) is expected to open its doors sooner than expected.

Brian Stauth, interim managing director of public services spoke about the facility at a public services committee meeting this morning.

City staff say the current APARC facility in operation is cramped and too small to face its current demand.

A new hangar building that wasn’t in service near the airport is being transformed into a purpose-built facility that will provide APARC with more room to operate.

The facility is expected to open its doors this summer, well ahead of the scheduled fall completion date.

The new space meets HVAC standards for animal facilities. Most of the interior construction is completed and exterior work including a sidewalk and parking stills needs to be finished.

Stauth says the city is looking forward to working with APARC as they move into the new facility.

“Actually being able to repurpose such an excellent building so there’s good news all around on this and APARC will be able to move into a state-of-the-art facility and as for animal care,” said Stauth.

“It’s just a terrific facility so it’s a really exciting thing for our city.”
