City expects to move quickly on future operator for Monarch Theatre

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Headway is being made as the city prepares to accept a proposal to sell the Monarch Theatre.

City staff have evaluated three bids to operate the historic theatre on Second Street SE. The recommended path forward toward a purchase has been made and will be viewed by an administration committee.

Brain Stauth, interim managing director of public services, says the next step is a short negotiation phase with the highest bidder to develop the contract.

“I think things should move relatively quickly and we’ll see a functioning and hopefully a well-attended Monarch Theatre in use in Medicine Hat again,” said Stauth.

The winning bid is expected to be awarded to the future operator at one of the next two public services committee meetings.

Once awarded the winning bid will be presented to city council for approval.

The city has been looking for a new owner ever since it purchased the theatre in 2021.
