Panleukopenia outbreak over at APARC

Feb 6, 2023 | 3:16 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After dealing with an outbreak of panleukopenia for most of January, this month began with some good news at the Alberta Pound & Rescue Centre – Medicine Hat.

The outbreak has been stopped and the quarantine is over.

In a Facebook post on Feb. 1, APARC says “We want to thank all of our amazing fosters and supporters for helping us through such tough times. Thankfully our quarantine is over, and we’re back to regular business hours (12-4pm on weekdays, closed weekends).”

Now they are back to happier times like finding “furever” homes for cats and dogs.

They are in the process of calling the fosters who helped during the outbreak to have the animals that needed to be evacuated returned.

“We cannot thank you all enough, with the support from our community we saved many, many lives! If you’re looking to add a new member to your family, you can view all our available animals here!”

Six cats had to be euthanized due to the outbreak of panleukopenia, a disease that attacks the white blood cells in felines.
