Tigers defeat Pats in front of sellout crowd

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Beckett Langkow led the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 5-1 victory over the Regina Pats at Co-op Place on Sunday evening.

Langkow made 30 saves on 31 shots on the way to victory, earning his 25th career WHL win, in front of 6,178 fans.

With the victory, Medicine Hat improves to 21-21-7-1, Regina drops to 24-21-2-1. The Tigers move into eighth place in the Eastern Conference, inside a playoff spot and just one point behind the Pats, who occupy seventh.

The visitors scored their lone goal 1:13 into the first period. Connor Bedard scored his 45th goal of the 2022-23 season with a one-timer in the low slot area.

After going up early, Regina allowed five unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the game.

Kurtis Smythe scored the game-winner late in the opening frame. The goal was Smythe’s second of the season and his first career WHL game-winning goal.

Beckett Langkow earned his career-high 18th win of the 2022-23 regular season.

“This is probably the first game in a while where I was a bit nervous before,” said Langkow, post-game.

“I think there’s been a couple games where they score early and I just try to stick to it and just forget about it and focus on the next shot.”

With their victory, the Tigers have defeated the Pats in both of their meetings this season, they’ll meet twice more before the playoffs. Medicine Hat is back in action on Friday in Lethbridge, Regina is headed back home to take on Moose Jaw on Saturday.
