MEDICINE HAT, AB – When a pipe burst on a December night at Medicine Hat’s Ronald McDonald House general manager Cassi Hider says it was heartbreaking.

Four families had to be moved out and the house hasn’t been able to accept new families in the almost two months since.

That’s changing today, much to Hider’s delight.

“People need a place to stay when their children are sick in Medicine Hat and the surrounding area that we go down. People forget we’re all into Swift Current, we’re down past Lethbridge and we want nothing more for them than to feel comfortable and not be stressed about where am I going to stay? where am I going to eat? where am I going to just have a moment to have a respite? So we’re here and we’re back and super excited,” says Hider.

A quiet announcement was made Wednesday about reopening and already the house had two phone calls and families moving in today.

In December, Hider and Ronald McDonald House worked with hotel partners so the families that had to evacuate could stay in the community. The did the same for five families who wanted to stay at the house during the shutdown and supplied gift cards to them all.

Hider says it was difficult not welcoming families in the past two months but was able to see one positive.

“The community just came and gathered around us and supported us immensely, So shoutout to all those people that came and defiantly our Medicine Hat Fire Department,” she says. “So that silver lining is how people gather and rally around something that they truly believe in and we’re just super fortunate for that.”

Renovations are underway and currently there are four suites available in the house.

Hider says they hope to have the house back to full occupancy in early spring
